FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Sam Darnold has made a robust impression on New York Jets offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates, who hinted the rookie quarterback could possibly be the starter if he continues to soak up the playbook at his present tempo.

“Are we giving him bits and pieces of the offense or are we throwing everything at him? We’re throwing everything at him,” Bates stated Wednesday at minicamp. “If he can handle it, if he can prove that he’s the starter, then that will take place when the time comes.”

The Jets will give Darnold an opportunity to win the job within the preseason, but it surely will not be simple. He’s competing towards incumbent Josh McCown and former Minnesota Vikings starter Teddy Bridgewater, each of whom have an enormous edge in expertise.
